Q2 sales increased by 25%, exceeding expectations
Following China and Australia, Tesla is launching the 6-seater 'Model Y L' in the US.
Reuters reported on the 2nd (local time) that Tesla is selling the 'Model Y L' in the United States and Puerto Rico.
This is a 3-row, 6-seater vehicle, an extended version of the existing Model Y, with a US consumer price set at $61,990 (approximately 95.48 million won).
Tesla announced the launch of 'Model Y L' in China last August, but had maintained a negative stance on its production and sales in the US.
CEO Elon Musk himself stated via X (formerly Twitter) that "this Model Y variant will not begin production in the US until late next year (2026)," adding that "considering the advent of the autonomous driving era in the US, we might not produce it at all."
It appears that the change of stance and the plan to launch in the US in mid-2026 is to increase sales.
The Model Y L is considered a model that has driven Tesla's performance even in China amidst competition with local automakers such as BYD. It has since been sold in Australia, New Zealand, and Southeast Asia.
Tesla achieved favorable results in the second quarter of this year.
Total orders in Q2 were 480,126 units, significantly exceeding the market average forecast of 406,600 units.
This is a remarkable 25% increase compared to 384,000 units ordered in the same period last year.
The most affordable Model 3 and the popular sport utility vehicle (SUV) Model Y accounted for 97% of total orders.
While Tesla sales had slowed down as US federal tax benefits for electric vehicles disappeared and public opinion on Musk worsened, it is interpreted that demand for electric vehicles surged again recently as oil prices rose due to the Iran war.
Despite such favorable performance, Tesla's stock price fell by 8% during intraday trading.
